Loro Parque continues to demonstrate that its commitment to animal welfare and conservation knows no borders. Since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, the Animal Embassy has maintained a constant line of support for zoos, rescue centres and professionals working in extreme conditions to protect animals affected by the conflict.
The latest charitable initiative launched by Loro Parque has been the delivery of 5,000 metres of specialised galvanised mesh to Kiev Zoo, an essential material for the construction of a new outdoor aviary. This facility will enable the sheltering and protection of birds rescued from the country’s border regions, many of which come from areas particularly hard-hit by the war.
Loro Parque’s president, Wolfgang Kiessling, highlighted the importance of maintaining cooperation between zoological institutions during particularly difficult times: “collaboration between zoos is fundamental to animal welfare”, and he noted that “this aid reflects Loro Parque’s commitment to institutions that, even in the midst of war, continue to work to protect animals and ensure their care”.
For his part, Loro Parque’s zoological director, Mike Jordan, explained that the mesh sent out stands out for its strength, durability and versatility, essential qualities for the construction of modern and safe aviaries. According to Jordan, it is one of the most sought-after materials for this type of facility, as it allows for the creation of functional spaces suitable for the care of birds undergoing recovery.
Kiev Zoo has expressed its gratitude to Loro Parque for this new donation, which it considers essential for continuing its work to protect wildlife in an extremely difficult context. The material received will directly contribute to improving the centre’s capacity to care for rescued animals and provide them with suitable welfare conditions.
This new donation builds on a long history of collaboration that Loro Parque has maintained with zoological institutions and rescue centres in Ukraine since 2022. Over the past three years, the Animal Embassy has mobilised resources, supplies and technical support to assist in the care of animals directly or indirectly affected by the war.
Among the most notable initiatives was the dispatch of a lorryload of specialised parrot feed, in collaboration with Berlin Zoo and Versele-Laga. This aid, valued at €20,000, was transported by train from Berlin to Kyiv for subsequent distribution to various centres requiring specific feed for their animals.
Loro Parque has also provided support to the Feldman Ecopark, located in Kharkiv, through food donations worth €20,000. This centre has been one of the zoological facilities affected by the conflict and has required urgent assistance to ensure the care of the animals in its charge.
Furthermore, Loro Parque has collaborated with the Wildlife Rescue Centre in Ukraine by sending one and a half tonnes of feed and tyres for the two ambulances used in the transport, rescue and rehabilitation of injured animals. These contributions have helped to strengthen the operational capacity of the teams working on the ground.
For Loro Parque, collaboration between zoological institutions is an essential tool for ensuring animal welfare, particularly in emergency situations. Accredited centres play a vital role not only in species conservation but also in responding to crises that threaten wildlife.
With this new initiative, Loro Parque reaffirms its role as an international leader in conservation and animal welfare. The Animal Embassy thus maintains its commitment to those who, even in the most adverse circumstances, dedicate their efforts to protecting wildlife and ensuring the future of species.
